Meyer Shircore and Associates Architects have designed a striking new medial centre in Midland, WA with the help of steel.
The architect's brief was to design a facility with a striking aesthetic that would house a medical centre and radiology clinic totalling 1020 square metres.
The medical centre comprises 14 consulting rooms; three treatment areas; staff and administration facilities; and staff and public ablutions.
The building's curved facade addresses the street and vehicular entry point and is clad in walling made from COLORBOND® Metallic steel with a stainless steel screen to provide sun shading.
In addition to the curved facade, signage panels have been treated as billboards and integrated into the overall design.
Julian Tan, graduate architect at Meyer Shircore, said: "We chose to use steel in this project for numerous reasons."
"The metallic steel cladding was selected as it was able to easily curve to the required radius of the facade and was an economical alternative to other cladding products suitable for facade applications. Also, the metallic surface has the added benefit of requiring minimal maintenance down the track."
Steel was used extensively throughout the project as it was the only material that could be curved to create the facade and also assist with the thermal efficiency of the building, helping to meet BCA requirements.
In addition to the facade cladding, steel was also used for the roof in the form of LYSAGHT TRIMDEK® and the awning roof areas were made from ZINCALUME® steel in the profile LYSAGHT CUSTOM ORB®.
