Maintaining and cleaning LYSAGHT® fencing and gates

As with all LYSAGHT® building products made from COLORBOND® steel, LYSAGHT® fences and gates require very little cleaning and maintenance, providing owners with more time to enjoy their yard rather than working on it.

To ensure that your LYSAGHT® fences and gates continue to look good year after year, there are a few simple rules and procedures that should be followed.

Let’s begin at the very start. After your LYSAGHT® fence and gate is installed, doublecheck that there are no metal chips or fillings remaining on your painted COLORBOND® steel surface, because if these remain, once wet, they could cause corrosive discolouration. This debris can be removed by gently hosing the area off and wiping down with a soft cloth.

For ongoing maintenance, washdown your fence and gate at least every six months (water restrictions permitting), if you live in a coastal area, this will need to be done more often. Pay particular attention to the area under the top rail which is sheltered from natural washing by rain. For debris such as cobwebs or stray lawn clippings, brushing with a soft bristled broom should be all that’s needed.

Given that your LYSAGHT® fence and gate is at ground level, there’ll be times that they may come into contact with fertiliser, weed killer or other potentially corrosive chemicals. You should also be careful if your LYSAGHT® fence and gate gets splashed with water from swimming pools which is corrosive. If this does happen, hose the affected area off and wash gently with household detergent before rinsing again with fresh water.

LYSAGHT® fencing features drainage notches at each end of the universal rails – periodically check that they are clear, so that the water can drain away freely – this is particularly important in dusty environments. Homeowners should also periodically check that the plastic fenceposts caps are secure, these offer protection from any sharp edges and stop water entering the inside of the posts during heavy rain.

With a simple maintenance schedule, your LYSAGHT® fencing and gate will not only continue to look great, but also have a long lifespan.

In summary, remember to:

  • Check for metal fillings and clippings after installation – remove if present
  • Wash down your LYSAGHT® fencing and gates at least every six months but more often if you live in a coastal or dusty environment
  • Use a soft bristled brush or broom to remove cobwebs, leaf matter or similar debris
  • Avoid exposure to corrosive liquids and matter such as fertilisers, weed killer and pool water; if exposed, wash clean as soon as possible
  • Periodically check drainage notches and fence post caps
