The LYSAGHT SUPAPURLIN® profiles consist of a LYSAGHT SupaZed® and SupaCee® profile. These SUPAPURLIN are an advancement of the traditional Zed and Cee profiles. The benefits of the traditional Zed and Cee profiles are retained, however there are substantial added benefits of the new LYSAGHT SupaZed® and SupaCee® purlin profiles.The features of the traditional purlins that are the same in the SUPAPURLIN® shapes are:
The efficiency of the SUPAPURLIN profiles delivers significant savings. Performance improvements can be achieved over traditional zed and cee purlin designs, when using LYSAGHT SupaZed® and LYSAGHT SupaCee® Purlins. The result is increased purlin spacing, increased purlin spans (frame or rafter spacing) and fewer rows of bridging.
(Performance comparisons vary by individual purlin size, span configuration and bridging configuration. We can help with design comparisons for your next project.)

Indicative only, subject to design criteria and assumptions used.
Please Note: When comparing the capacity of LYSAGHT® purlins with other purlin profiles care needs to be exercised. Comparisons can only be successfully completed when a "like-for-like" comparison is made. Differences can result from a number of reasons such as the selection of design parameters for;

The capacities are based on the cladding providing adequate restraint to the attached flange.
Where the cladding provides reduced restraint the tables are highlighted in areas where there may be a reduction in the purlin capacity. In these areas it is recommended that the SupaPurlin software be used to determine more accurate design capacities.
Reduced cladding restraint may result from: shallow or weak cladding profiles; some clip-fixed claddings of low restraint; cladding installed with deep and low-rigidity thermal packers; non-steel claddings with large pre-drilled/punched holes that allow for thermal expansion; cladding not fixed directly to the purlin, eg largely spaced battens, combination of any of the above.

No.
The traditional methods of lapping, bolting, bridging, accessories, etc, have not been changed. There are, however, a number of added benefits to the builders, fabricators and riggers.
No. A patent protects the new purlin profile. The patent is under dual ownership Sydney University and Bluescope Lysaght. Thus any attempt to infringe the patent will result in legal action being taken.
It is an industry recommendation to hang services from the web or in the bottom flanges close to the web, not from the lips of traditional purlins. This recommendation has not changed with LYSAGHT SUPAPURLINS® and hanging from the lips is not recommended. Our manual details guidelines to the engineer for carrying out inspections on this type of loading.
Yes.
The new SupaPurlin profile has added features (web stiffeners) that will increase its performance in floor applications. The SupaPurlin profile can also be used in all other applications where the traditional purlins have been used.
No.
The flange dimensions and flange shape do not allow these profiles to lap with each other. Thus in projects where there is to be an extension from an existing building there will need to be some attention to detailing to allow the connection to be made. This will be as simple as some notching of lips of the new purlins to be installed.
There will always be projects where this will be necessary. In these situations we can provide the traditional purlin profiles (subject to enquiry), however there may be an extended lead-time or some minimum order requirements.
