The Dance of Design and Nature: A Roofing Marvel at Philip Island's Penguin Parade Visitor Centre

Discover how LYSAGHT KLIP-LOK 700 HIGH STRENGTH® seamlessly merges with the eco-conscious architecture of Philip Island's newest star attraction.

The wonders of nature converge with human ingenuity at the Penguin Parade Visitor Centre on Philip Island. Often, when we think of visitor centres, we envision bland, functional buildings. However, this centre, as showcased on the renowned 'Australia By Design: Architecture' show, is a masterclass in innovative design, eco-sustainability, and creating an unforgettable experience for visitors.

Host and architect, Jill Garner, alongside Scott from Terroir architects, embarked on a captivating journey through the centre, revealing its architectural intricacies. From its inception, the design ethos was clear — it wasn’t just about erecting a building but integrating it harmoniously with the surrounding sensitive environment. And while many features are noteworthy, the roof particularly stands out. Here’s why.

The Roof's Story

Powerful Aesthetics and Functionality:

The roofing of the centre is not just a shelter; it's a statement. LYSAGHT KLIP-LOK 700 HIGH STRENGTH® seamlessly blends with the architectural vision, creating an aesthetic that’s reminiscent of the surrounding landscape while providing the resilience and strength a visitor centre of this scale demands.

An Emblem of Durability:

Made from COLORBOND® steel, this roofing material is more than just durable; it’s a reflection of the tenacity of nature itself. Just as the penguins brave the elements, so too does this roof, thanks to Activate® technology that offers enhanced corrosion resistance.

No Room for Compromise:

With a concealed, clip-fixed system, there’s no compromise on the sleek finish. The absence of visible fasteners ensures a neat, uninterrupted look, aligning with the overarching design philosophy of a seamless blend with the environment.

Adapting to Nature:

In a nod to the centre's setting, the roofing material is designed to accommodate expansion and contraction due to temperature variations, making it suitable for long-length roofs like this one. This adaptability, combined with the LOK-KLIP® end-and-expansion joint system, guarantees a watertight roofing solution, further enhancing the building’s eco-sustainability.

Garner points out the dramatic patterns and shadows on the ceiling, likening them to dinosaur scales. Scott shares a hidden gem — the over 42,000 zinc shingles on the project, inspired by a penguin's distinctive feather patterns when observed under a microscope.

A special mention must be given to Peta Wittig from the Penguin Visitor Parade Centre, who emphasises the centre's larger goal of not just showcasing the penguins but promoting the greater good — the conservation work across the island.

In the world of architecture, mediocrity is the real enemy. At the Penguin Parade Visitor Centre, mediocrity was shunned, replaced by a passion for excellence, innovative thinking, and a commitment to sustainability. The roof, a proud installation of LYSAGHT KLIP-LOK 700 HIGH STRENGTH®, plays a pivotal role in this success story, proving that in the dance between design and nature, both can lead.
